Horace T. Morse-University of Minnesota Alumni Association Award for Outstanding Contributions to Undergraduate Education

Each year since 1965-66, the University of Minnesota has recognized a select group of faculty members for their outstanding contributions to undergraduate education.  This honor is awarded to exceptional candidates nominated by colleges in their quest to identify excellence in undergraduate education.  In addition to honoring individual faculty members, the award contributes to the improvement of undergraduate education at the University by publicizing their work to serve as a resource for the whole faculty.

The award, named for a former dean of General College, is made possible through generous support of the University of Minnesota Alumni Association and the Office of the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost.

2014 Award Recipients

Giancarlo Casale, History, College of Liberal Arts

A historian of the early modern Ottoman Empire, Professor Casale is a brilliant and innovative scholar, an effective and popular undergraduate teacher, an academic leader in his integration of foreign language and study abroad instruction, a major public intellectual on the subjects of Muslims and Islam in world history, and thoughtful, forceful and effective DUS. His passionate commitment to education exemplifies the qualities that the Morse Alumni Award was designed to recognize.

Sehoya Cotner, Biology Program, College of Biological Sciences

Sehoya Cotner, Ph.D. is a Teaching Associate Professor in the Biology Program of the College of Biological Sciences. She is a gifted and dedicated teacher who creates innovative, student centered learning environments, in both traditional lecture rooms and laboratory settings, that significantly improve student comprehension of and positive attitudes toward science. Her teaching has inspired countless students while her leadership has helped her many colleagues to do their best work.

Bradley Deane, Division of the Humanities, Morris

Associate Professor of English Bradley Deane possesses an excellent and well-established record of challenging and imaginative teaching and published scholarship. His many significant contributions to UMM include founding a chapter of a national honors society, directing and teaching in the Honors Program, mentoring colleagues formally and informally, and serving effectively in campus governance. As a teacher-scholar, advisor, colleague, and advocate for the liberal arts, Deane is an invaluable member of the UMM community.

Lorraine F. Francis, Chemical Engineering and Materials Science, College of Science and Engineering

As a visionary teacher, advisor, research mentor, and academic program developer, Lorraine F. Francis committed herself to advancing undergraduate education at the University. Lorraine served as a lower-division advisor, director of undergraduate studies, and crafted the current academic curriculum in Materials Science and Engineering enabling its expansion. Besides many accomplishments, Lorraine’s dedication to respectful and responsive student-teacher interaction as a pillar for impactful teaching is what truly establishes her as an inspiration for undergraduate education.

Paul Imbertson, Electrical and Computer Engineering, College of Science and Engineering

Paul Imbertson is totally dedicated to student empowerment. His students have discovered that the world is belongs to them when they accept that they belong to the world. They have found the courage to start companies and the strength to overcome loss. He envisions an energetic student body empowered to reach their full potential, and he works towards that vision by involving students in community engagement, by mentoring student-centered programs, and through mindful teaching.

Ruth A. Lindquist, Adult and Gerontological Health Cooperative, School of Nursing

Professor Lindquist has served the University community over 30 years, as faculty, division head, and academic associate dean. Her leadership excellence is recognized with national fellowships, and demonstrated in chairing state and national professional and educational organizations. She is recipient of teaching, mentoring, advising and service awards; an active scholar with national prominence in cardiovascular nursing; and distinguished teacher, mentor and “life-changer” of undergraduate student career trajectories, for which she receives consistent highest student evaluations.

Robert K. Poch, Postsecondary Teaching and Learning, College of Education and Human Development

As a teacher, historian, dean, and state office executive, Dr. Robert Poch’s work with and on behalf of undergraduates is imprinted with common themes: a commitment to equity and to the value of diversity; the principles of intellectual rigor and integrity; a belief that education should be accessible and transformative. Students describe his course as one in which “students feel valued, heard and respected;” “a life changing semester;” “a rare privilege;” and “a profound experience.”

Jane E. Wissinger, Chemistry, College of Science and Engineering

Jane Wissinger is an outstanding teacher in the Department of Chemistry. From her evaluations, 94% of the respondents would recommend her to their peers. Jane’s innovative curriculum development of the 2311 organic chemistry laboratory course, talent for teaching sophomore organic chemistry lecture classes, leadership in undergraduate education green chemistry initiatives and guided-inquiry pedagogy, advising of undergraduate researchers, publications, national reputation, outreach activities, and mentoring of future academics are truly worthy of a Morse Award.
